Being recent empty nesters we were looking for a featured toaster oven so we didn't have to fire up the regular oven for baking and broiling smaller portions.

The 6-Slice Digital Toaster Oven caught my eye because of the digital controls, looks and size. The one we bought was branded with the Oster name but it is identical to this one (Sunbeam and Oster are the same company)

Toasting. It took 5 minutes and 15 seconds to lightly toast four frozen slices of bread. 50 more seconds for a medium and almost 7 minutes for dark. This is on the border of acceptable, though to be expected for a toaster oven of this size.

It takes some playing with the settings to determine which setting gives you the desired shade of toast, so be prepared to ruin a slice or two in the beginning. One annoyance is that the toaster doesn't keep the setting once you choose it. You need to re-set it every time you toast something, unless your chosen setting is 4.

Broiling. The Oster fails miserably at this task. I tried to broil fish and rather than getting a quickly cooked fillet with crisp outside, it was gently warmed through and somewhat mushy. Efforts to use the broiler for grilled cheese, burgers and potatoes were similarly unsuccessful. The element simply does not get hot enough to accomplish the task.

Baking. The Oster does a decent job here, though the settings are off considerably. At the 450 degree setting the oven only reached 375 degrees. If you're looking to roast something using high heat, forget this unit.

The good. The rack is easily adjustable and the rack and oven are simple to clean. It's a nice looking device, about mid sized compared to the other 6 slice toaster ovens I've seen.

Bottom Line. If you aren't in a hurry in the morning and won't be using it for broiling the 6-Slice Digital Toaster Oven should be OK, but I'm sure there are better performing toaster ovens out there.
